Similarity, Comparability and Analogy in WordNet: Squaring the Analogical Circle with Mondrian

چکیده

Similarity and comparability are complementary notions that are easy to confuse and difficult to tease apart. Semantic similarity makes comparison meaningful, while comparison is often the pragmatic means through which similarity is perceived and constructed. To date, WordNet has found wide application as a basis for modeling and measuring semantic similarity, but is lacking as a basis for wellformed comparability judgments. In this paper we describe a corpus-based approach to learning a model of sensible comparability, and show how this pragmatic model can be integrated with a WordNet-based notion of semantic similarity. We go on to show how this model of comparability, called Mondrian, provides a convenient and efficient means of supporting simple relational analogies between WordNet terms, and how analogies of this kind can be used for the automatic acquisition of enriching relational knowledge in WordNet.

Dynamic Type Creation in Metaphor Interpretation and Analogical Reasoning: A Case-Study with WordNet

Metaphor and Analogy are perhaps the most challenging phenomena for a conceptual representation to facilitate, since by their very nature they seek to stretch the boundaries of domain description and dynamically establish new ways of determining inter-domain similarity. This research considers the problem of how a conceptual system structured around a central taxonomy can dynamically create new...

WordNet Sits the S.A.T. - A Knowledge-Based Approach to Lexical Analogy

One can measure the extent to which a knowledge-base enables intelligent or creative behavior by determining how useful such a knowledge-base is to the solution of standard psychometric or scholastic tests. In this paper we consider the utility of WordNet, a comprehensive lexical knowledge-base of English word meanings, to the solution of S.A.T. analogies. We propose that these analogies test a...

Analogical Reasoning with a Synergy of WordNet and HowNet

WordNet and HowNet are large-scale lexical resources that adopt complementary perspectives toward semantic representation. WordNet is differential, inasmuch as it provides a rich taxonomic structure but little in the way of explicit propositional content. HowNet is constructive, and dedicates its representational energies to the explicit definition of relational structures for each lexico-conce...

Software Design using Analogy and WordNet

Software design is a complex cognitive task. Given the lack of consistent and general methodologies, it often demands creative capacities that sometimes bring our insight closer to arts than to an engineering field. Much of the success obtained by software engineers in their designs, comes from their acquired know-how. One way to improve their work, is by providing CASE tools capable of assisti...

Automatic Construction of Persian ICT WordNet using Princeton WordNet

WordNet is a large lexical database of English language, in which, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets). Each synset expresses a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by both semantic and lexical relations. WordNet is essentially used for word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, and text translation. In this paper, we propose s...
